‘Bloggers are journalists’

Jayvee Fernandez of A Bugged Life sent me this message about a podcast he did featuring a local PR executive talking about ‘bloggers as journalist.” It is an intriguing discussion, which highlights a changing view of the bloggers’ role in the market.

The podcast, about 25 minutes long, features PR executive Geiser Maclang discussing her work as a “publicist” and how her firm is increasingly eyeing bloggers for publicity.

Joey Alarilla discussed this recently in Blog Addicts in a post titled, “Let’s be bloggers for truth.

At times as humorous as it was heartfelt, the good priest’s prayer was a timely reminder of our need to be responsible bloggers. Sure, we blog for different reasons, and as I’ve said many times, including in this blog post for CNET Asia, bloggers are not journalists, and journalists, even though we may blog, are journalists first, with different standards, different values, than bloggers.

This does not mean, however, that we cannot celebrate our differences, and learn from each other. Frankly, the danger I see now in everyone’s mad rush to become bloggers, and of companies, politicians and other groups to court the favor of bloggers, is that people may no longer see the need for objectivity, or learn to distinguish press releases from real stories.

I’ve also posted this topic on Blog Addicts this week.

(UPDATE 3) And the winners are…

UPDATE 3: Read the story about this event at INQUIRER.net breaking news.

Excerpt:

MANILA, Philippines — It was a no-frills affair.

But Filipino bloggers came dressed in their best, some like they were already winners in “semi-formal” getup, others clad casually in jeans and rubber shoes.

UPDATE 2:I forgot to add the categories. So here it is again. You can also see some loving, er, live blogging at Blog Addicts and @play. Congratulations to everyone.

The post below was done several hours ago. By this time, some of the winners and organizers are out partying.

In my case, I need a shuteye. Good night world!

Lagalag on @Play & A Bugged life

I’m sending this “link of love” to @play and A Bugged Life. This is about a recent podcast interview with Lagalag’s Wilfredo Pascual. Here’s A Bugged Life’s entry:

I was able to finally talk to Wil Pascual, the creator of the Lagalag Project, which is an experiment of sorts that features Filipinos around the world and two traveling moleskines. We enjoyed a good 20 minutes talking about photography, moleskines and blogs.

Requiem: PBS on media murder worldwide

I read this from Sylvia Mayuga’s breaking story on Global Nation (Thanks JV). It features Sheila Coronel, formerly of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, looking at the dangers faced by today’s journalists in different countries. Below is an introduction from Frontline World‘s video report titled “Requiem”:

At a time when fair and accurate news coverage is more essential than ever, 2006 marked one of the deadliest years on record for journalists. Surprisingly, despite the fierce fighting in Iraq, most of the slain journalists did not die in combat. They were deliberately targeted, hunted down, and murdered for investigating corruption, crime, or human rights abuses in countries around the world. In Requiem, FRONTLINE/World essayist Sheila Coronel looks at the dangers journalists confront as they try to tell their stories and pays special tribute to reporters working in the Philippines, Russia, Turkey, Zimbabwe, China and Iraq who have been killed, jailed, or exiled for daring to speak truth to power.

(UPDATE) Nation held hostage

It was a tense day yesterday for more than 20 children and their tutors. For 10 hours, children and their teachers were held hostage inside a bus parked near the Manila City Hall. The children were freed later. While I was covering the happenings at the Commission on Elections (Comelec), everyone was distracted by this hostage crisis. The man behind it, civil engineer Armando “Jun” Ducat, said he did it to call attention to corruption in government. He has been known to pull such “stunts” in the past, but this grabbed the nation’s and the world’s attention for hours. Ducat is also owner of a daycare center in Tondo, Manila.

Here’s a video clip taken by our reporter Tetch Torres early that day. You can also listen to audio clips of Ducat’s demand here and here.

Mighty Dacs calls yesterday’s hostage drama just plain madness. She writes:

Damn, we were LIVE on CNN today. And all because some day-care center guy decided to hostage his own wards to fight for education for the poor.

Madness.

Even though he had food and air conditioning for the pre-school kids, he did have with him hand grenades and a gun.

And who acted as negotiators? Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Mr. Chavit “Whistleblower” Singson. Tsss. Showbuzz.

As I was watching the live coverage on GMA7 around the time the hostage-takers promised to release the children, here comes some school (I can’t remember which one, so I’d rather not say) to the rescue, promising that if the hostage-kids were freed then they’d take care of their elementary and high school education.

Hellooo?!!! Eh di lahat nalang tayo mang-hostage ng mga toddler para puro scholarship yung mga kabataan ngayon pagdating nila sa grade school at highschool. D-uh!!!

Author-journalist on convergent journalism

Author and former journalist Dr. Stephen Quinn was in Manila to attend a forum. Last Sunday, he spent a few hours with his students from the Ateneo Center for Journalism (that includes me) talking about about the Philippines, journalism, online media, mobile phones, convergent journalism in Asia, and his love for red wine! (But I was not able to catch that on cam). hehe. Here’s Dr Quinn answering some of my questions at Cafe Adriatico, Malate.

Comelec has video of military campaigning–party-list groups

“Damning” evidence or not, this video taken by ABC 5 shows ex-communists, accompanied by government troops, speaking out against certain party-list groups. The Commission on Elections is allegedly holding a copy of this video clip.

Here’s the video clip courtesy of ABC 5.
