Pandora: Discover the music you like

Type an artist that you want to listen to, say, Joe Satriani. Pandora finds this artist, creates a personalized radio station and starts playing it (Thanks En for sharing this online find ;-)). But wait, it doesn’t stop there. It will also start playing similar music based on your taste. Welcome to Pandora, an Internet radio that allows you to literally discover music. Done by the Music Genome Project, Pandora is a web-based “interface to make this available to music lovers so they could use this musical ‘connective-tissue’ to discover new music based on songs or artists they already know.”

For almost seven years now, we have been hard at work on the Music Genome Project. It’s the most comprehensive analysis of music ever undertaken. Together our team of fifty musician-analysts have been listening to music, one song at a time, studying and collecting literally hundreds of musical details on every song. It takes 20-30 minutes per song to capture all of the little details that give each recording its magical sound – melody, harmony, instrumentation, rhythm, vocals, lyrics … and more – close to 400 attributes! We continue this work every day to keep up with the incredible flow of great new music coming from studios, stadiums and garages around the country.

Pandora™ is the doorway to this vast trove of musical information. With Pandora you can explore to your heart’s content. Just drop the name of one of your favorite songs or artists into Pandora and let the Genome Project go. It will quickly scan its entire world of analyzed music, almost a century of popular recordings – new and old, well known and completely obscure – to find songs with interesting musical similarities to your choice. Then sit back and enjoy as it creates a listening experience full of current and soon-to-be favorite songs for you.

This recent discovery does not stop there. It also allows you to find people (read: social networking) sharing your musical taste. As you register, you have the choice to have an ad-free experience. But you have to pay subscription. Once registered (it’s free), you can list down your musical influences. It then takes you a music player that quickly chooses a song that fits your taste! Sweet! You can also buy songs from here. So there you go. Perhaps the most complete online musical that I have used to date.
There’s more to this new Internet radio service. But you have to discover it for yourself. Check out their blog and their podcast.

Here’s a new artist I found as I started my musical journey from Joe Satriani:

Swedish guitarist Mattias “IA” Eklunch was originally a drummer when he saw Frank Zappa at the tender age of 11. Immediately changing his outlook on music, he dove head first into playing the guitar and dropped out of school at 13 to practice more. Self-taught, he began writing his own material and eventually released his first album, 2002’s Freak Guitar, on Favored Nations. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide

  1. Good day Stephen Elliot. I just got a letter dated 1/19/12 from Lorelie Lee in an envelope from you. We have no idea whatsoever how I got on your list. But I’ll write Lorelie again (a real letter, even), because it was pretty fucking brave of her to write that.
